A cold frame is used to simulate optimum climatic conditions for your garden. It is a simple structure that can be easily built to attract solar energy and radiation that is needed for the growth of plants that are planted inside the frame. It helps in retaining the humidity that is required for the growth of the plants especially during the offseason. Some flowering plants for instance bloom only in the winters. Therefore in order to extend the blooming season, one can use cold frames to grow such flowering plants throughout the year.
Tender and tropical plants can sustain and grow healthy in a cold frame. Having a greenhouse is also an effective alternative but many of us have space constraints, so planting seeds in a cold frame is the ideal solution. A cold frame that is popularly used by horticulturalists has a removable glass top and the entire frame can be easily sunk into ground for the seeds to sprout. More than often a cold frame is typically used to plant seedlings somewhere during mid spring and to protect them from the bitter winters so the vegetables can have enough time to grow to maturity and be harvested. Cold frames are ideally used to extend the growth of seedlings by a few weeks to get a head start on the growing season.
